NATO convenes today for an emergency meeting upon Turkey's appeal. A statement of condemnation is expected to come out of the meeting.

A new statement has come from Damascus ahead of the meeting where new measures against Syria are expected to be taken up.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Makdissi said that Syria is not Turkey's enemy and the incident took place accidentally.

However, Makdissi insisted, despite the radar pictures provided by Turkey, that the Turkish aircraft violated Syrian air space descending to an altitude of 100 meters and said even if the aircraft had been a Syrian jetfighter; it would have been instantly struck to eliminate a risk.

Referring to the NATO meeting, Makdissi said that if the NATO countries were going to meet for a hostile purpose, they should know that Syrian land is holy.
