Skirmishes broke out between the police and the demonstrators who assembled before the parliament.

Tens of thousands of people took part in the demonstrations staged in two different spots in the capital Athens. They protested against the government plan to lay off 15 thousand more people from public offices, further increase taxes and slash salaries.

They said they would not bow to the Medieval working conditions and burned the flag of Germany who they shouted was responsible for Greece's crisis and likened the Merkel government to the Nazis.

When they made an attempt to break through the security barrier in front of the parliament scuffles broke out.

The police using tear gas bombs drove the protesters out of Sintigma Square.

Many of the protesters who responded to the police action by hurling bottles and stones were taken into custody.
