PANETTA SAID US SEEKS $70 MILLION FOR ISRAELI DEFENSE SHIELD

The US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said US plans to give Israel the extra 70 million dollars for its short-range missile defense programme.

Following his talks with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak in Pentagon, Panetta made a statement. Panetta said the US president Barack Obama had directed him to fill Israel's request for the extra money for the defense programme system known as the "Iron Dome". The system is designed to intercept short-range rockets and mortars.

Panetta said they would seek additional funding for the programme over the next three years however he didn't mention the amount. The US administration has already provided 205 million dollars for the defense system.
