The Red Cross officials are trying to evacuate the civilians stranded in Homs which have been under heavy army bombardment for the last ten days.
Work has been started after a cessation of hostilities in Homs between the army and the opposition groups.
Gunshots can still be heard, reports say, in some parts of Homs.
A cease fire was declared in the town for the evacuation of civilians a couple of days ago but as neither side abided by the cessation pledge; the Red Cross could take no action.
Fierce fighting, in the meantime, is continuing in many towns of the country covering a large territory from the capital Damascus to the border with Turkey.
